Mission: To engage caring women leaders to measurably improve the quality of life for Calvert County women, children and families through the investment of their time, talent and treasure.
All across America, United Ways are building relationships, bringing together the public, non-profits and private sectors as community problem solvers to invest in system change strategies. In this process United Ways realized that they hold a unique community leadership position, which enables them to expand the sometimes-narrow economic and social power structures currently in place to include women of all background.
As research has shown there are two very different worlds of women in United States. On one hand, in this country, women control more than 51% of personal wealth; on the other hand, 65% of the poor in this country are adult women. Given this dichotomy, United Way have started a Women's Initiative-Calvert Women United for Change to bring these two worlds together and achieve measurable outcomes towards the empowerment of all women, weather they want to share their leadership, treasure and time for the betterment of their community or weather they struggle to improve their individual life outcomes.
United Ways Initiative will focus its resources to touch the lives of women seeking to make a difference in their lives and in the lives of their neighbors.
For the next 3 years the Initiative will invest in three different areas affecting the lives of women and children in Calvert County.
Early Childhood-In Calvert County there are presently 6,222 children under age 6, nearly 5% live in poverty. This is an urgent problem—one that will not improve unless we invest in healthy early child development and education.
Healthy Girls– It is essential that young girls receive the education, tools, and resources necessary for them to make healthier decisions as they transition from girlhood into womanhood.
Women's Economic Empowerment-Addressing women's economic empowerment as a central theme is at the heart of addressing the needs of women in our communities, it lifts the soul of our families, and it touches all women at their core.
At the present UWCC is looking to recruit powerful, committed women leaders who can help us embark on this meaningful journey for the betterment of our community. These women care about people, the community and the future. They will give their talent and treasures to make their community a better place. We believe that together we have a great opportunity to lead agenda setting for women, girls and families in Calvert County.
For Women......
the Initiative recognizes and highlights the key role that women play in improving the quality of life in the region. It also creates an opportunity for women to shape the future in which they want their family to live.
For the Community...
the Initiative raises awareness of the resources that women bring to our community's work in providing health and human service programs for people in need
For United Way...
the Initiative brings increased participation from women in terms of giving and volunteering in key positions.
