Success By 6, a United Way of Calvert County special initiative, focuses on ensuring that our youngest population, ages birth through six, develop the emotional, cognitive and physical capacities and skills they need to achieve well being and to enter school ready to learn.

For six years, Success By 6 has been working collaboratively with local business leaders and community agencies to promote positive outcomes for young children by educating parents and the community about the importance of the early years from birth through age six. The Success By 6 initiative of Calvert County has been instrumental in improving the quality of child care services through increased provider training, and in providing families with support and resources for preparing their children for school through various home visitation programs. The Success By 6 initiative also promotes early childhood literacy through programs that increase young children's access to books.

Our Mission

United Way of Calvert County Success By 6 focuses on ensuring that our youngest population, ages birth through six, develop the emotional, social, cognitive and physical capacities and skills they need to achieve well being and to enter school ready to learn.

Our Strategies

  • Increase public awareness and understanding of the importance of early childhood development.
  • Improve access to effective services through early literacy programs and home visitation services for families and children.
  • Strengthen public policy that is family-friendly on a local, state and national level.
  • Foster positive outcomes such as quality child care and school readiness for our community’s children.

SUCCESS THROUGH COLLABORATION

An illustration of our progress and that of our many community partners can be seen in the 2006-2007 school year data from the Maryland Model of School Readiness, indicating that 70% of our children are entering school ready to learn . In 1999, only 43% of Kindergartners were entering school ready to learn-that is a twenty-seven percent improvement!
